Cybersecurity Lessons #4 & 5: Establish and Test Your Data Protection Plan

Your data is the most important thing to protect from cybercriminals. The objective of most ransomware attacks is to delete or encrypt your business’s data, so they can hold it for ransom.

The Cybereason report, Ransomware: The True Cost to Business, states that only 51% of organizations that experience a ransomware attack can recover all their data when it becomes encrypted or is stolen.

Establish Your Data Back-up Strategy

The best way to avoid losing data is to back it up in several places, including a data store that is separate from your network, which is called an off-site back. The offsite back-up provides an air gap, which is a necessary separation from your network to prevent cybercriminals from accessing it.

Disaster Recovery
It is critical to establish a data back-up process, and test it to ensure the safety of your data and enable quick recovery.

It is important to monitor both on-site and off-site locations for any suspicious activity, such as a cybercriminal planting a code for later use. Also, keep in mind that the maintenance for these back-ups may vary, as certain datasets will need to be updated more often than others.

Test Your Recovery Process

Once you have determined that your backups are synced and ready, you’ll want to test them for real-life applications. The frequency of such tests will depend on your environment and how much data is stored in the backups.

While some may believe that they are already secure, testing the recovery through your workstations, servers, and data ensures that you can successfully restore all necessary company data if an attack occurs.

Flagship Networks offers a Cybersecurity Audit to help you evaluate your back-up and recovery strategy to ensure that it’s a reliable part of your cyber defenses.
